In 2018, I was still a product designer shuttling between office buildings in Singapore.
After a 10-hour workday, I looked forward to returning to my small rented apartment: slipping into soft cotton and linen slippers, pouring a bowl of hot soup into a perfectly curved ceramic bowl, and hanging the laundry on the hangers that smelt of natural wood. Those humble household items, like silent friends, quietly soothed the fatigue of commuting and the stress of work. But finding something that suited my taste was always difficult: either cold, industrial designs or overpriced imported brands. Finding a homeware that "understood Singaporean life" became a challenge.
In 2019, I quit my job, teamed up with my friend Ajie, who works in supply chain management, and started Rwqxceo's "journey of trial and error" in a small warehouse in Clementi.
The first product was a cotton-linen cushion that we revised eight times. To adapt to Singapore's hot weather, we specifically chose a breathable linen blend fabric, so that even after sitting for a long time, you won't feel sweaty. For the colors, we picked low-saturation "Changi Green" and "Marina Blue", which can not only match the common light-colored walls in HDB flats but also remind people of Singapore's parks and coasts. Even for the stitching, we required the workers to use double-thread tight stitching. A-jie said, "Singaporeans value 'durability for the price' when buying things; we can't let the cushions start fraying after half a year."
We only made 200 of the first batch of cushions, and we carried cartons to set up a stall at the neighborhood market.
At first, no one paid any attention to us until an aunt squatted down, felt the fabric, and said, "This cloth feels comfortable. Unlike some cushions, it doesn't stick to the skin after sitting for a long time." That day, we sold 37 cushions, and every piece of feedback we received became the motivation to keep going.
Rwqxceo
Nowadays, Rwqxceo's warehouse has moved from Clementi to a larger space
Our team has also gained a few young people who, like us, love "home". But we always remember our original intention: in the fast-paced city of Singapore, using every warm household item to help everyone live life the way they want — maybe making a cup of coffee in a favorite mug in the morning, maybe leaning against a comfortable cushion to watch a show at night, or maybe when friends come over, everyone sitting around a nice dining table, eating and chatting. A home has never been a cold space; it is gradually pieced together by those small items full of life and the tenderness hidden in the details. And what Rwqxceo wants to do is to be the partner that helps make your "home" warmer, accompanying you through every ordinary day in the Lion City.
